Editor’s Note

I want to clarify the entry “A Great Weekend.” My wife, Stacey Longo, was with me at Rock and Shock this past weekend. She is a member of NEHW so I should have mentioned her. My thoughts for excluding her was that I didn’t want to be accused of favoritism since she is my wife. I have corrected my mistake of leaving her out of the entry.

For more information about Longo, check out her website http://www.staceylongo.com/.

More Rock and Shock news

Thanks to NEHW member Trisha Wooldridge for sending in this tidbit:
Worcester Magazine prominently featured and listed New England Horror Writers in their article about Rock and Shock.  Event coordinator, TJ May, was quoted several times, and he made sure to mention several other members.  The full article is available here:

A Great Weekend

What did you do this weekend? Let me know in the comments.

I went to Rock and Shock for the first time with my wife, Stacey Longo (http://www.staceylongo.com/). It won’t be our last. Hung out for awhile at the NEHW table. Danny Evarts, Trisha Woolridge, T.J. May, Kelli Jones and Matt Bechtel were just some of the NEHW members manning the table.

It was great meeting Danny Trejo (Machete), Zoe Bell (Death Proof), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog), and Alexander Winter (Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure) too. For more information about Rock and Shock, check out its website http://www.rockandshock.com/.

NEHW member on Paranormal State

NEHW member Stefan Petrucha on A&E’s Paranormal State!

Sunday October 17 at 9:30 PM on A&E author Stefan Petrucha made his first appearance on the hit series Paranormal State. The episode, They Come Out at Night was second in the back to back premiere of season 5. In addition to witnessing some amazing evidence, Stefan uncovered a possible explanation for the invisible forces tormenting a suburban family by delving into the folklore of the local Wampanoag tribe.
Over his 25 years as a professional writer, Stefan’s work has often reflected his lifelong fascination with the paranormal. His first original comic series, Meta-4 tackled such topics as UFO history and trance channeling, while his award-winning writing on the popular X-Files comic from Topps was one of the few comics to boast a bibliography. His latest novel, Blood Prophecy, combines vampires, the historical discovery of the Rosetta stone and ancient Gnostic myths. He’s been a researcher, educational and technical writer and has many fiction and non-books and articles to his credit.
Given Stefan’s background, when Paranormal State star Ryan Buell wanted a writing partner for his first book, HarperCollins was quick to suggest him. Intrigued by his resume, Ryan, an avid X-Files fan, gave him a call, and after that conversation decided to work with him. The result, Paranormal State: My Journey Into the Unknown, is now on sale, already in its second printing and enjoying rave reviews.
While working with Ryan on the book, Stefan was invited to watch last season’s “Ghosts of Gettysburg” investigation. He was immediately impressed with the PRS team’s integrity and good humor. Ryan since invited Stefan on this case, thinking his research skills could be put to good use. He’s now been along with the team on two additional investigations that will be appearing later this year, with plans afoot for more.
Be sure to catch They Come out at Night!

The Upcoming Weekend

The weekend is almost here; one more day. What are you doing this weekend? Will you go see Jackass 3D or Red? I saw Red and didn’t care for it. My review will be at www.dvdsnapshot.com sometime on Friday night.

There are a few conventions going on this weekend. One of those conventions is the Wizard World New England Comic Con 2010. NEHW member Christopher Golden will be appearing at the Cinequest booth with Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast members, James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Nicholas Brendon, Amber Benson, Clare Kramer, Mercedes McNab, Doug Jones and Mark Metcalf.

The New England Comic Con runs from October 15 through the 17 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. For more information, check out www.wizardworld.com.

Another convention is Rock and Shock 2010, which was mentioned in Thursday’s blog entry. Author Jack Ketchum will be there. He is the writer of Cover, The Girl Next Door and Off Season to name a few.

There will be a lot of authors at the NEHW table. Read Thursday’s entry for the names and the times they will be at the table throughout the convention. When you get done meeting the authors, you can always go and meet some Hollywood celebrities like Danny Trejo (Machete), the cast of The Human Centipede and George Romero (Land of the Dead). Even Adrienne Barbeau who starred in The Fog and Swamp Thing will be there. She is still doing horror today. She is currently making the rounds on General Hospital.

For more information on Rock and Shock 2010, check out www.rockandshock.com.

Everybody have a great weekend. I may post some items over the weekend. Be sure to check back for any new entries.

Books released/Rock and Shock 2010

Welcome to Tuesday everyone. Hopefully, Monday was good to you. Today’s blog is about two new books and where the authors of these books will be this weekend.

In Sickness: Stories from a very Dark Place by L.L. Soares and Laura Cooney is out now from Skullvines Press (http://skullvines.com). It’s a short story collection where these writers guide you through the regions of the horrific and the surreal. “Here are just some of the strange sights you’ll see along the way: a ghost girl takes her living playmate on an eerie hunt for buried treasure; on Halloween night, a college student finds a little black dress that’s more than just a fashion accessory; a Sasquatch hides in the rhododendrons, waiting for the woman he loves; a group of super-smart monkeys are in the mood to peel a meal, but it ain’t bananas they’re craving; and a husband and wife, bound together in a web of tragic secrets, are haunted by strange, pig-faced children.” The book is available in print through www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com. It is also available as an ebook and on Kindle.

Soares and Cooney are members of the New England Horror Writers (www.newenglandhorror.org).They are not only writers of dark fiction; they are also married to each other. They will be at Rock and Shock 2010 at the DCU Center & the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 16. They will be at the NEHW table from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Rock and Shock 2010 is being held from October 15 through October 17. For more information about the convention, check out the website at www.rockandshock.com.

Soares will also be debuting Breaking Eggs at the convention. Breaking Eggs is a novella he co-wrote with Kurt Newton and is being published by Sideshow Press (https://www.horror-mall.com/sideshowpress/). Newton will also be at the NEHW table with Soares and Cooney.

What to expect this week.

Hello, readers. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Did you get to one of the NEHW appearances? Or did you go see the new release My Soul to Take? Or did you rent some movies?

I did the rental thing. I rented The Karate Kid (2010). It could have been a real horror show. It wasn’t. It honored the original. It even had a soul of its own. A lot of remakes can’t stand by itself, but this movie does. Jaden Smith is going to be a movie star just like his dad, Will Smith. I wanted to rent The Human Centipede. My local Blockbuster doesn’t carry it. I went to a Blockbuster in another town. They have one copy which was rented out. I went to a couple Redboxes. They didn’t have it. I ended up calling Best Buy 25 miles away. They had three copies. Long story short, I now own the movie. The movie didn’t live up to the hype. I wasn’t satisfied. I have seen more disturbing images in the Saw, Hostel and Final Destination movies. This still won’t keep me from seeing the sequel that is in the works. I can always hope that the next movie will be more satisfying.

Now onto what you can expect from this blog this week, there will be entries about more NEHW appearances and the release of a book written by a NEHW member.  One of the appearances will be big. It will allow horror fans to meet a number of NEHW members. Keep coming back this week and find out what I am talking about.
