Marketing and Networking Opportunity for our Authors and Artists!

New England Horror Writers has reserved a booth at the Hebron Harvest Fair for our members from Thursday, September 8 through Sunday, September 11, 2011.  This fair draws over 250,000 visitors from the greater Hartford area and around New England and is a fantastic opportunity for our members to sell their books, illustrations, and get their names out there! NEHW members have the opportunity to appear at the booth to sell books, meet people, and sign books for the low fee of $25.00 to help defray the cost of the space.  Two members have generously offered their house as home base for storing extra books and having a place to go for some down time.  Some sleeping space is also available. Interested members should contact Jason Harris at dudley228@gmail.com to reserve your space now!  Please put “Hebron Fair” in the subject. Authors who are unable to attend the fair but would like their books offered at the NEHW booth can pay a $10 fee to do so.  Contact Jason for more details.

Note from Jason Harris: People who have contacted me already please send me another email. My computer had an issue and ate my list like a zombie eats brains.

Zombie Walk:

The town of Enfield, CT, near the Massachusetts border, will be holding a Zombie Walk to End Hunger on August 13, 2011, and NEHW plans to be there!  We will have a vendor tent at this one-day event, available to our members to sell books and art, and to meet the public.   The Zombie Walk is open to all ages, and authors and artists can expect both horror fans and media at this event. There is a fee of $5 for our members to sit at the booth for the day.  Please contact Jason Harris at dudley228@gmail.com.

NEHW MEMBER NEWS:

From Don D’Ammassa:

D’Ammassa had “Translation Station,” a collection of short science fiction stories, published in June by Merry Blacksmith Press.

Necon Ebooks just published a completely rewritten version of D’Ammassa’s first novel, Blood Beast, under its original title, The Gargoyle.

From Andrea Perron:

Perron welcomes people to read about her journey home to Rhode Island on her blog,

http://andreaperron-firstbooktour.blogspot.com/. She hopes to share some of her impressions with readers.

Her Rhode Island book tour exceeded all expectations! It was a seven-day series of events which included Brown & Hopkins Country Store in Chepachet and Borders Books in the Providence Place Mall. Her father accompanied her and went back to their old homestead for the first time since June of 1980, to encounter the same spirit who haunted him for a decade. No question: she is still there. The encounter was captured on film! She has written about this phenomenal journey “home” and posted it as: “Revisiting the Past: There’s No Place Like Home” on her blogspot,

http://andreaperron-firstbooktour.blogspot.com/.

Perron’s cinematographer, Manny Cantu, came along on this remarkable excursion and he filmed all of her public appearances. The first of these videos has been produced from the raw footage and released to the public. It is a short film of the Brown & Hopkins book signing, a special event in a place close to her heart. This piece is currently posted on her Facebook pages.

While in R.I., Perron was on Keith & Sandra Johnson’s program “GHOSTS R N.E.A.R.” and they report that the response to the half-hour segment has been spectacular. They’ve asked her to do another spot when she returns in October, which she accepted. The program, EPISODE 76, may be viewed by visiting the following website: http://www.nearparanormal.com.

Upon returning to Georgia, she discovered that the film currently in development regarding certain elements of her families’ story is moving forward, according to Variety Magazine. Unfortunately, there were several unsavory websites that pirated my videos and put out some misinformation on the subject. The film, entitled The Conjuring, is based solely on the recollections of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Essentially, it will reflect their version of events which transpired in our old farmhouse in Harrisville, R.I. Apparently New Line Cinema is in talks with James Wan about directing the film. Variety reported news of the project succinctly but then it was picked up, warped and twisted to such an extent that it now requires clarification. The film is NOT based on the trilogy House of Darkness House of Light. In fact, she doesn’t expect these two separate and distinct projects will even remotely resemble each other. Nicole Kidman is NOT slated to play her mother Carolyn, but is instead considering another film project in the same genre. If these highly questionable websites continue forwarding inaccurate information and continue attaching her name to it, she will address each directly. In the interim, she’s watching…closely.

Perron will soon be returning to Florida for a series of engagements currently being booked. The itinerary will be posted the moment all the details are available but one sure thing is a book signing at “Here Be Dragons Bookshoppe” in Winter Garden. Dates to be announced.

Perron will be back in R.I. for an extended stay in September and plans on being there through Halloween…many events are planned already.

From Sandy DeLuca:

DeLuca’s novel, Descent, is available for the first time in a paperback edition. It’s available at

http://www.uninvitedbooks.com/index.html and Amazon.com.

From Scott and David Goudsward:

Scott and David Goudsward’s book Shadows Over Florida made Ellen Datlow’s Best Horror of the Year Volume 3

Scott also had a piece of flash fiction “Carousel” accepted for Pill Hill’s Daily Frights 2012.  He also had a short story, “That Place,” accepted for Evil Jester’s The Call of Lovecraft.

Dave is pleased to announce he has had a third flash piece accepted in the Pill Hill Press anthology, Daily Frights 2012. More importantly, his brother absolutely “hates” the story, “Never Ask a Genie to Make You the King of Rock.” So it’s a win-win.

From Deb Eskie:

Look for Pill Hill Press’ There was a Crooked House, featuring Deb Eskie’s short story “22 Beckett St.,” due out this summer.

The current issue of Deadman’s Tome feature’s Eskie’s story “Springtime and Jesus.”

Later this summer, Pill Hill Press publishes The Big Book of New Short Horror, featuring Eskie’s story “Heternormative.”

From Karen Dent:

Dent’s Anthologies:

“Rules, Purpose, Plan” and “The Beginning” are both available in Daily Bits of Flesh 2011, published by Pill Hill Press.

“Mr. Hoo-Ward’s Unwise Promise” is part of a Christmas anthology entitled Peace on All the Earths, published by Whortleberry Press.

“Grave Mistake” is part of a Halloween anthology entitled, Halloween Dances With The Dead published by Whortleberry Press.

“Frog” is a modern day erotic fairy tale, part of the Spellbound, e-book anthology by Ravenous Press.

“The Man” is available to read free online at www.ruthlesspeoples.com in Ruthless Peoples Magazine Issue #7.

Dent is working on getting her and her sisters’ website, http://www.TheSistersDent.com up and running.

Seven Archons Press has an OPEN SUBMISSON for an anthology Writings on the Wall:

What if your identity was a prison and self-destruction was your freedom? For Writings on the Wall, Seven Archons is looking for original transgressive tales involving highly developed characters who are nihilistic, anti-social, and seemingly mentally ill. These characters should feel out of touch, not only with themselves, but with the world around them. Give us your grittiest, unbound fiction. Stay to the point, but nothing is off limits. However, keep in mind we do want quality writing. If it is purely for the sake of shock value, it will be rejected.

From Trisha Wooldridge:

Call for Submissions for UnCONventional, a short story anthology edited by Kate Kaynak and Trisha Wooldridge.

The editors are looking for stories that take place at fantasy/sci-fi conventions or any other gathering in which the convention/conference itself is just the cover for something supernatural or fantastic. Imagine time travelers using a steam punk con to cover their attempt to open a portal to return to their own times, werewolves holding a beauty pageant at a dog show, or vampires holding a treaty summit at Dragon*Con.

Suggested length: 3,000-7,000 words. Up to 10,000 words is possible, but it will be a HARD sell.

Due Date: July 1.

Submission Guidelines: Please email your submissions to editor@SpencerHillPress.com.
Put your story into the BODY of the email (no attachments, please!) and put “UnCONventional” in your subject line along with the title of your story.

Legalese: We can only accept previously unpublished stories. Please do not use licensed characters or any trademarked or copyright-protected material without written permission in advance of submission (This is NOT the place for fan fiction). Contributor compensation will include a $10 advance paid upon publication, a contributor copy of the paper version, a royalty percentage split between all contributors, and, of course, bragging rights. Stories should be appropriate for adult and teen readers (age 14 and up); please, no explicit sex or graphic violence!

NEHW MEMBER NEWS:

From Kristi Petersen Schoonover:

Schoonover has been accepted to the Norman Mailer Center’s summer workshop, “When is a Writer’s Work Done” with Veronica Windholz, a manuscript editor of fiction and nonfiction for more than thirty years who has worked with Norman Mailer, E.L. Doctorow, Salman Rushdie, and many others. Windholz, who is on the staff at Viking Penguin, has taught in the publishing program at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and has held positions at Random House and the Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency.

“When is a Writer’s Work Done” will be held at the Norman Mailer Writer Center in Provincetown, Mass. The workshop will have 7 attendees, who were selected based on merit.

Her short story “Wailing Station,” which was a Toasted Cheese contest winner and was included in a syllabus for a course at Wolfeboro, NH’s Brewster Academy last year, has now been added to the syllabus for Composition II: Introduction to Literature at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Mass.

Anyone can read the original version (it has since been tightened up) of the story here: http://tclj.toasted-cheese.com/2007/7-1/petersen.htm.

From Andrea Perron:

Greetings! As all of you know, the book, House of Darkness House of Light, has been out for several weeks now and many of you have already read it. I truly appreciate the many comments I’ve received. The response has been overwhelming and heartwarming. As the book is launched, it is a critically important time to establish its “presence” in the world. Therefore, I am now making this request of those closest to me to help enhance the website destined to become “HOME” for this trilogy. If you would be so kind, I would love to see your assessment and opinion of Volume One “on record” for everyone to see. As you might suspect, many have googled me in recent weeks and I’d like to provide something of substance to read besides the excerpts provided on the site. Please consider taking a few moments to express your impressions of the book here at: houseofdarknesshouseoflight.com.

Feel free to “friend” me on my public Facebook page, too! If you know someone who is currently reading the story, I’d appreciate it if you would pass this message along to them.
Your critiques will become part of the history of this project. Thanks for your time and kind consideration!

I have a new video release that was posted on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/user/AndreaPerron. This video is destined to be a promotional DVD for the book and the text is from the back cover of the book.

I always knew if I told my family story it would inspire the believers among us. The response to the book has been amazing. The bookstores don’t even know how to categorize it because the tale covers so much ground. Among the dozens of companies carrying the book in numerous countries in the few short weeks since its release, I’ve seen it listed as follows:
Biography & Autobiography / Occult / Metaphysical / Philosophy / Religion / Unexplained phenomena / Spirituality / Paranormal / Faith / History / Supernatural / Mind – Body – Spirit

The story was never “genre-specific” but instead touches on many aspects of humanity and our belief systems. It is no ordinary scary story but is rather a mystery…a psychological drama which includes elements of comedy as well. Essentially, it is everything…as complicated as any mortal soul who ventures into its pages.

My YouTube Channel has been completely revamped by Margie Mersky, my SEO Administrator. It has an entirely new look.

I will be departing for Rhode Island on June 10th. Once I arrive, I will have a series of scheduled appearances in the area. I will have an interview with Keith and Sandra Johnson on their longstanding and groundbreaking broadcast “Ghosts – R – N.E.A.R.” I have several other interviews scheduled and a feature article is being written for The Valley Breeze, which spans the communities of northern Rhode Island. The big event for the trip is a book signing at Borders in Providence Place Mall on June 18th at 2:00 p.m. Two events at Barnes & Noble are pending as well and I’m particularly excited about appearing at the Smithfield location, as I still consider it my bookstore. I once lived a few miles from it and was a veritable fixture in the aisles. It will feel like a homecoming in every conceivable way! Times and dates will be posted soon on my public figure Facebook page “House of Darkness House of Light” as well as on my YouTube site and every other place in cyberspace.

Meanwhile, here in Atlanta the publisher and editor of Oracle 20-20 magazine has scheduled an interview with me and intends to spotlight the book in a feature article to be released in either August or September, depending on my availability for the interview.

NEHW MEMBER NEWS:

From Andrea Perron:

Perron has visited Florida recently where she was signing books, making videos, planning and executing plans and making the MOST of her seven days there! She has met some truly extraordinary souls in her travels…the kindness and generosity has been astounding. When she returns to Georgia, she plans to inform everyone about her trip up by adding information to her YouTube channel. During her trip, she went to a flower show in Winter Garden then had an excursion to the beach. She saw the ocean again, which she hasn’t seen in a long time. Her trip allowed her to see her sister Nancy and baby Selena (her first grandchild), which was delightful.

From David L. Tamarin:
Tamarin writes the column “Ugly World” for the Severed Cinema website, www.severed-cinema.com/uglyworld. The new column should be up by the end of April or the beginning of May.

He has an article, “Interesting Paraphilias” in the new issue of Girls and Corpses. The magazine now sells a card for your wallet that says, “if I die, cannibals and necrophiliacs can have my body.” He developed the idea and sold it to the magazine. The cards can be purchased at www.girlsandcorpses.com. He writes film reviews for www.horrornews.net. His current reviews are of The Manson Family and Seven Days.

He co-wrote the screenplay for Countess Bathoria’s Graveyard Picture Show, which debuted at the Festival of Fear in Quebec. Since it was decided to add more to the film, there is a new scene that he wrote and acted in. In the scene, he is tortured and killed by a doll, which was filmed in Canada a few months ago. The film is in advanced post-production status and will be available on DVD in the future.

He can be seen in the film, Beg, portraying a drunken frat guy dressed like a scarecrow. There is no release date yet. It stars Tony Todd and other genre legends.

Along with movies, he can be seen eating cake in the premiere episode of ABC’s Body of Proof, which aired in March.

He has acted in another film, Legless, which premiered last month. He also acted in the video, Legless, which is the movie’s theme song by Sorrowseed.

From Deb Eskie:

From Matt Bechtel:
NECON E-BOOKS ANNOUNCES TITLES FROM TWO OF NEHW’S FINEST
Spring has finally sprung across New England — the chill has left the air, the trees are in bloom, and the Sox are back to .500 (almost; they will be if they win tonight as I’m writing this, so everyone cross their fingers that I didn’t just jinx them). Even though we’ve reached readers worldwide, we here at Necon E-Books are darn proud of our local roots; after all, we’re based in Rhode Island and “Necon” itself stands for “Northeastern Writers’ Conference.” As such, we’re particularly proud to announce that two of our latest titles (one currently available and one forthcoming) are from authors with whom NEHW Members just might be a tad familiar.
AVAILABLE NOW: Christmas Trees and Monkeys by Daniel G. Keohane
The first volume of collected short fiction from the immensely talented Dan Keohane (and no, I didn’t just write that to make sure this gets included in the newsletter!), Christmas Trees and Monkeys is a fun, harrowing and intoxicating menagerie which includes four original stories and an introduction from the author for each tale. Moreover, just in case you need one more reason to purchase this title, Dan has provided it. In his own words: “As with the print edition, 100 percent of all author royalties earned from the sale of this collection are being donated to the New England Multiple Sclerosis Society, in honor of my sister Anne. I figured I already got paid for most of these stories, anyway, so may as well let someone else benefit from them now — aside from you, dear readers.”
COMING SOON: The Gargoyle by Don D’Ammassa
In the author’s words, “This novel previously appeared in substantially different form as Blood Beast.” When we first approached Don about publishing his work, he insisted that he did not just want to revise his novel, he wanted to rewrite it; in amazingly short order, he returned and absolutely floored us with his newly-titled manuscript, The Gargoyle. D’Ammassa is a true wordsmith and a master storyteller; pick up this latest title of our Necon Classic Horror Library, and you’ll see why.
As always, all Necon E-Books titles are available at www.neconebooks.com and other major e-book distribution sites.

From Andrea Perron:

Perron is proud to announce she had four bookings in one afternoon, two speaking engagements and an interview.

“House of Darkness House of Light Volume One was released on March 11 and so far has been very well received, to my family’s delight. It is the true story of a haunting, which occurs to this day in an old farmhouse in Harrisville, R.I. As the eldest daughter of Roger and Carolyn Perron, I have lived this saga and have also watched the way in which our entire family of seven has been transformed over the course of a decade dwelling in such a spiritual setting. It is the unabridged chronicling of supernatural episodes we endured between 1970 and 1980. Though we waited thirty years to reveal these closely-guarded secrets, ultimately there was no escaping these events.

Paranormal Investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren researched and concluded that what resides within those ancient walls cannot or will not be dispelled. The current residents would certainly attest to their conclusion as fact. This story is multi-faceted. It explores the many elements of the numerous and varied encounters, which occurred at the time our family was confronted by the spirits in our home. It draws only one conclusion: there is something there beyond mortal existence.

Many people have speculated about this significant and compelling story over the years, knowing only fragments of it; often based on rumor and innuendo. It reveals what really happened. To this day none of us know why … us.”

Please visit her YouTube channel for further information:
http://www.youtube.com/user/AndreaPerron

She welcomes interaction with anyone interested in discussing these remarkable events. No question is too provocative, though there are no definitive answers in this realm. Her email is houseofdarknesshouseoflight@gmail.com.

From Scott Goudsward:

Goudsward has had two stories accepted by Pill Hill Press, “All I want is a Cadillac” will be in 2012 Daily Frights and “Swamp Gas” will be appearing in How the West was Wicked.

From Joy Marchand:

Marchand has resumed writing and blogging after a long absence, and has a series of essays called “Murder Ballads” on her blog that may be of interest to those who like gloomy, creepy, and disturbing songs.

From Scotty Stets:

Stets (a.k.a. Lawson Welles) recently returned from a research trip in Japan to complete his research on Japanese vampire legends and folklore for his Master’s thesis at Penn State University. In view of the depth of data gleaned from the adventure, he is considering publication. The bulk of his research centered around the Iwate prefecture of Japan, and in lieu of recent tragic events, which he just barely missed himself, the question of how this will affect the nation’s folklore and legends will be put under the proverbial microscope in his book.

He also interviewed Japanese World War II veterans (including a Kamikaze pilot) for his documentary film on the subject, and recorded new music for a soundtrack to his movie as well. His first film, Cricket Snapper, a neo-noir BDSM crime drama based on the true story of the Quincy dominatrix will be premiering in Boston in late-April or May.

NEHW MEET AND GREET EVENTS:

From Nathan Wrann:
Wrann will be screening his film, Burning Inside, at the Somerville Theater on
Wednesday, Jan. 5. The film is part of the theater’s monthly
screening series, All Things Horror Presents. Burning Inside is an
exploration of the intertwined nature of revenge and memory. The
Somerville Theater is located at 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA.
For more information about the theater, check out the venue’s
website, http://www.somervilletheatreonline.com.
Burning Inside is the second feature from Wrann and his
production company, Dalton Gang Productions. The production company
was founded in 2006 by Wrann and his wife, Kimberly Dalton.
They started the production company because they were dissatisfied
with the caliber of modern independent horror movies and cult
thrillers. They set out to create the kind of underground movies
they would like to see. They want those movies to be literate and
thought provoking in plot, brutal and unrelenting in tension.
Burning Inside is the first film distributed by Channel Midnight
Releasing (www.channelmidnight.com),
the new distribution label from respected cult filmmaker James
Felix McKenney (Canniballistic!, Hypothermia) and producers Lisa
Wisely (Automatons, Satan Hates You) and Chase Tyler of The Work
Room Productions. The trailer is available at http://youtu.be/n6SLeg1STCU
Wrann is an independent filmmaker out of West Haven,
Connecticut. He shot the film entirely in Connecticut. For more
information about Wrann and his production company, check out the
website www.daltongang-productions.com.
There will be a Q & A with director/producer Nathan Wrann
after the showing. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased either at
the door or online at http://www.allthingshorroronline.net.
Doors open at 7:30 pm. For more information call (617) 869-3690 or

from Ellen Muth (Dead Like Me), James Keane (Crazy Hearts),
Juli Erickson (Carried Away), Sarah Nicklin (Nun of That) and

indie horror films, Eden Lake, a 2008 indie cult tale from the
United Kingdom and Stir of Echoes, the supernatural murder mystery
starring Kevin Bacon. It will be shot in California this summer.
Bob is currently scouting locations and talking to candidates to
direct his movie. He is also looking for investors and other
interested parties who might be interested in being involved
with the movie. Any interested people can contact him at bobheske@gmail.com.

From John Grover:

NEHW MEMBER NEWS:

From Nathan Wrann:

Earlier this month, writer-director and NEHW member Nathan Wrann had his second film, Burning Inside, shown at the historic Thomaston Opera House in Thomaston, Connecticut.

Burning Inside is an exploration of the intertwined nature of revenge and memory. It is the second feature from Wrann and his production company, Dalton Gang Productions. The production company was founded in 2006 by Wrann and his wife, Kimberly Dalton. They started the production company because they were dissatisfied with the caliber of modern independent horror movies and cult thrillers. They set out to create the kind of underground movies they would like to see. They want those movies to be literate and thought provoking in plot, brutal and unrelenting in tension.

Burning Inside was shot entirely in Connecticut and premiered at the Connecticut Film Festival earlier this year.

After the screening, there was a discussion with Wrann and the cast and crew of the film. Wrann chose the Thomaston Opera House because the venue is “a beautifully restored, historic theater.” He scouted it when looking for locations to shoot his next project which is a short film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher. “Upon entering the theater, I immediately fell in love with the remarkable craftsmanship found in the auditorium,” Wrann said. “While discussing its use as a location, we discovered that the theater is equipped to screen movies and knew that it would be a perfect venue for a screening of Burning Inside.”

Wrann is an independent filmmaker out of West Haven, Connecticut.

Burning Inside is the first film distributed by Channel Midnight Releasing (www.channelmidnight.com), the new distribution label from respected cult filmmaker James Felix McKenney (Canniballistic!, Hypothermia) and producers Lisa Wisely (Automatons, Satan Hates You) and Chase Tyler of The Work Room Productions.
