About a year ago, the crew over at Sci-Fi Saturday Night contacted me about a book project they were thinking of putting together. The Dome enthusiastically described how he had a bunch of old photographs of people. What did I think of the idea of sending those photos to various authors with just a character name and occupation, and having the authors write the stories of those people’s lives?
It sounded like a heck of a lot of fun to me. Some time later, I got an e-mail.
Stacey,
Your character’s name is Gussie, and she works in an apothecary. Other than that, go for it!
As soon as I saw the cheerful, bright-eyed young woman in the photo, her story started coming to me. Taking a page from William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, I decided Gussie would be the person the women in town would discreetly visit when they found themselves with a problem. Perhaps they were unhappy about being in the family way. Or were in need of a way out of an abusive marriage. Woman problems. You see.
But what town? Gussie looked like a sturdy New Englander to me. And in what town, did I think, would women who had . . . problems . . . seek dark solutions? Fall River, Massachusetts, of course. I had the first draft of “Miss Elizabeth’s Poison” done in a week, and the final version done within the month.
It was a blast to write. Now we need your help to get it in print.
Sci-Fi Saturday Night has started a Kickstarter program to fund the final publication of My Peculiar Family. There’s an impressive lineup of authors in the anthology, including James A. Moore, Tracy Hickman, and William Meikle, among others. To donate (and snag some impressive rewards), please visit here; and support the arts.
You’ll be glad you did, I can promise you.
The 11th Rock & Shock is less than two weeks away and the organizers have brought horror fans another great line-up this year. Some names fans will recognize celebrities such as Tom Savini, Brad Dourif, Roddy Piper, Derek Mears, and Sid Haig. There are also new ones to the convention such as Sharknado and American Pie star Tara Reid and Jeffrey Combs (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Enterprise)
Celebrities who had to cancel their appearances last year are back on the guest list for this year and they are Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster) and John Ratzenberger ( Cheers and the Toy Story movies).
Check out the guest list here.
Once again, there will be authors, publishers, and bookstores at the convention. Authors include Bram Stoker award-winner L.L Soares, Joe Knetter, Stacey Longo, Tim J. Finn, and Bracken MacLeod. Knetter and Longo will be participating on a writer’s panel at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a few other authors. Publishers and bookstores include Fenham Publishing and Books & Boos respectively.
Rock & Shock takes place at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. from Oct. 17th through the 19th.
The 6th Annual Connecticut Authors Trail celebrated its finale on Thursday, September 4, 2014. The featured speaker was TV personality Mar Jennings, author of Life on Mar’s: Creating Casual Luxury. Giving a lively presentation from the stage of the Cabaret Theater at Mohegan Sun, Jennings gave advice and tips on creating a warm and inviting environment inside and outside the home. Sharing beautiful photos of his own home and garden in Westport, CT, Jennings shared his six principles for decorating a room, including repeating patterns and incorporating nature into the décor. He answered questions from the audience about personal interior decorating preferences and the best flea markets to shop in the area.
Many of the other authors who were featured on the Author Trail this year were in attendance for the finale. Mystery writer Liz Mugavero (Kneading to Die), historian Quincy Abbot (From Schoolboy to Soldier), and horror writer Stacey Longo (Secret Things) were all on hand with copies of their books. Libraries participating in the 2014 Connecticut Authors Trail kindly donated raffle baskets, and readers who attended the authors’ presentations throughout the state were given tickets to enter in the raffles. Mohegan Sun generously provided appetizers for the event.

Books & Boos, which closed its physical location at the end of May, is continuing to do events like it was doing when the bookstore was still open. This weekend will give people two opportunities to visit the traveling bookstore.
The first opportunity to visit the bookstore will be Saturday at the Connecticut Horrorfest. Along with used books, people will be able to meet authors Stacey Longo and G. Elmer Munson and get them to sign one of their books. The horrorfest takes place at the Courtyard Waterbury Marriott located at 63 Grand Street in Waterbury, CT. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The second opportunity happens on Sunday when Books & Boos takes part in the Open Air Market and Festival at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, Connecticut. This will be the bookstore’s second appearance at this event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wadsworth Mansion is located at 421 Wadsworth St. in Middletown, CT. Longo will also be signing her books at this event as well. She is joined by authors Dan Foley, Dale T. Phillips, and Joseph Ross.

There will be three authors at the Books & Boos’ tables during the Foxboro Jaycees Fourth Annual Spring Fair happening this Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Foxboro, MA.
The three authors people can meet are Stacey Longo, Dale T. Phillips, and Vlad Vaslyn. Fair attendees will be able to purchase these author’s books and get them signed as well. Longo will have her short story collection, Secret Things, Phillips will have his horror thriller, Shadow of the Wendigo, and Vaslyn will have his science fiction thrill, The Button.
Along with the authors, there will be crafters, artists, and vendors at the Spring Fair.
The fair was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the prospect of rainy weather caused the organizers to hold the fair on its rain date. The fair is being held on the Foxboro Common in Foxboro, MA.
The second Rhode Island Comic Con held at the Rhode Island Convention Center was a big success. The attendance for this year was around 33,000, which was close to 11,000 more than last year’s convention. There were some issues with pre-sale tickets and a few celebrities such as Anthony Michael Hall, Jett Lucas, and Nichelle Nichols weren’t able to make it because of the gunman who shot up Terminal 3 at the Los Angeles International Airport Friday morning. Nichols felt so bad about missing the convention that she has already signed on for next year’s convention.
Comic Con had the entire convention center this year so the organizers were able to make more room in the aisles so there was plenty of room to browse the vendor tables and get pictures of the cosplay that were on display around the entire convention. There were people dressed as characters from movies, television, comic books, video games and books.
